Field Trip Process and Instructions
STEP 1:
Follow your school’s process to pick a date and reserve your activity buses. Once you have a confirmed date, fill out BOTH of the links below:
STEP 4:
Prepare your students to come to the monument by introducing the Holocaust and leading up to the Spiritual Resistance lesson from Women of the Shoah, as well as other lessons if you have time. See the links in the section below for resources to use to do this.
Also, have your students fill out the Padlet link with what they have learned and what questions they have at least two days before you come to the monument. Liz will send the link to your Padlet once you book your date.
If your school requires permission slips, here is a suggested one you can adapt (just make a copy of it).
STEP 7:
After the tour, send your invoice to Liz Weide, fill out the tour evaluation, post about your tour on the Facebook page, and you are done!
We will send your $200 stipend to you in the mail.
STEP 2:
Decide on trip details, including whether you will visit other sites in Greensboro, such as the International Civil Rights Museum (admission fees apply; not covered by Women of the Shoah) or the Greensboro History Museum (free). You have to book these in advance!
Also decide on how you will handle lunch. Either bring lunches to eat in the park or visit local food places (see suggestions below).
STEP 5:
Watch the weather in the days before you go, and make sure to contact Liz Weide and your docent if you need to reschedule or would like to work out a backup plan. Prepare your students for the weather, as it is an outdoor classroom!
On the morning of the field trip, send your docent a text with the final count of students who will be on the trip that day. Keep them informed of your progress all of the way up until you get there. Plan for a bathroom break so that you are ready at your scheduled time.
Be aware that we often cannot accommodate groups who arrive very early, as the docent arrives for setup about 30 minutes before and often cannot adjust to earlier arrivals. Very late arrivals are also difficult for docents, so stay in communication!
STEP 3:
Work with your school to determine costs for the field trip, and add them to the Women of the Shoah Invoice template (link below—you have to make a copy). It is important to know the approximate cost of the field trip before you go, and to give us a heads-up if it will exceed $900. We will pay for substitutes for 1 chaperone per 25 students, bus driver fees, and bus mileage.
STEP 6:
Use this parking map to park the bus in the lot across from the Children’s Museum:
When you arrive at the site, be sure to help the docent distribute materials, get your students settled in chairs or on blankets on the ground, and then actively monitor them. We suggest that teachers sit in front of their students, facing them, to help address any issues.
Please assign a grade for the handout that the students will complete on-site, as this helps them focus on the assignment and fosters greater interaction with the docent. We will provide that handout and all writing materials, as well as a clipboard for them to write on. Also, help collect materials at the end of the tour.
To honor the individuals depicted in this monument and the solemn moment it represents, we ask that visitors refrain from eating and drinking while at the monument. Water bottles are welcome as needed.
